I’m talking today to Jamie Stover. She is a Nana, and entrepreneur. Janie, welcome. Thanks.
Janee L Stover 0:10
I’m glad to be here.
Emmalou Penrod 0:12
And I just love being around Janee. She’s not only good natured and happy and positive, but we have a lot in common. We’re both grandmothers, we’re both, you know, we’re not staying home knitting. We have a business. And we both love spending time with our grandchildren. We love spending time growing our businesses. And I think, Janie, it’s safe to say we’re both kind of hoping that we’re instilling this in our grandchildren, just learning how to set goals and reach them. How To grow your own business, be your own boss,
Janee L Stover 0:59
Well, and you just want to influence and have a positive influence on those grandkids because they are my posterity. They’re your posterity, they’re, you know, we’re the ones that can make a difference in their lives. And that’s what I tried to do.
Emmalou Penrod 1:14
Yes, I love it, in some small way. And and I appreciate that you were able to introduce me to a mascara that doesn’t irritate my eyes. So tell me how you became involved with LimeLife?
Janee L Stover 1:30
Well, you know, it was three years ago and I became an empty nester. I really, I really never had a career quote unquote, or education beyond my high school years. I raised my four kids. I have a developmentally delayed daughter, who will be 40 this year, but I spent 18 years, 19 years being her advocate through the school system and all that that entailed. So I learned a lot about advocacy and speaking up for oneself and redoing that. But becoming an empty nester, I was like, Okay, now what do I do? I’ve focused my life on my four kids and spent so much time with this daughter and helping her and now she was in an independent living home and my four, or three boys, were all married, and giving me grandchildren. And I thought, okay, I wanted to be doing something that would make a difference and make a difference for me, for those around me and I was introduced to LimeLife, and their natural skincare products, plant based with no parabens, no harmful chemicals, they’re vegan and gluten free. And so I tried to, I started to use those. And I loved them! They made a difference. When I show people before and after pictures now, three years ago, three years later, there is quite the difference. Because using products that are good for you, all of a sudden, in fact, you know, I’ve had comments that you know, your aging, reversely, I guess so to speak> Because, you know, when you take care of yourself, then you, you make a difference. And so I wanted to make that, because not only do I have the skincare, but then I was introduced to the professional grade makeup that professional makeup artists use in the industry, for theater, for celebrities, for photoshoots for TV, and it’s just different different in the way that it has more pigment, it doesn’t have the parabens, it doesn’t have a lot of the harmful chemicals that are out there. I mean, you have to have some kind of ingredients there to preserve them and stuff. But the most of those bad things are not in them and it makes a difference in your skin and taking care of it and wearing that. And I believe that using makeup, whether you be young or older, it’s not there to make a mask for yourself, but it’s to enhance the beauty and that’s what I especially like to impress upon the young ones and especially I wanted to be an example for my granddaughters as they, I have a 12 year old who’s really into makeup and I want to I want her to know that she doesn’t need a lot, you know, because she’s beautiful without wearing a lot. You know there’s a lot of Instagram and other things that are going on in the world with makeup and wearing a lot contouring and doing this and doing that and I just want, I want these especially young girls to know they’re beautiful, just being who they are. And that a little makeup can enhance that but not to hide their beauty underneath that, all that makeup. So that’s kind of in, so I just started sharing and wanting to make a difference in other, other women and other girls lives. So that’s where I started.
Emmalou Penrod 5:08
So, and LimeLife provides products both for skincare and makeup. So it’s a full?
Janee L Stover 5:18
Yes. So full line. Because taking care of your skin is first of all the most important and the foundation to put makeup on. If you have taken good care of your skin as well moisturize, then makeup goes on much more easily. And you need less of it, then if you don’t take care of your skin. So I’ve always impressing upon those that I meet also to wash that makeup off at the end of the day, do not sleep in it, because, oh my goodness, that’s the worst thing that you can do for your skin in your face. And that skin is the only one that you’re going to get. So you need to take care of it. And mascara, it can just build up and really wreck, wreck havoc on your eyelashes and on your face. So
Emmalou Penrod 6:07
Now I’ve heard of some cosmetic manufacturers who are saying, “Our cosmetics are so good. You don’t need to worry about washing them off at the end of the day.” You’re saying no, no, I can see you’re shaking your head.
Janee L Stover 6:19
No, I’m saying your your skin needs to breathe. It needs to be able to, and not only that, that makeup, when you’re sleeping in that pillow, that pillow ends up taking some of that makeup. And now you’re going to go the next night and then you’re going to have that makeup on your pillow. And that is usually when acne presents itself between not washing your face. And if you really deal with a lot of acne, then changing your pillowcase periodically, more so than you do your sheets, really helps with the acne also. So those are all clues that may be you know, if your face is not being cleansed well enough, or often enough,
Emmalou Penrod 7:07
That is good to know, I had never heard of that. Changing the pillowcase more frequently to prevent acne buildup, which I know is a serious problem.
Janee L Stover 7:25
It is and even those the teenagers really have a lot to deal with it. But also young adults and young moms, you know, with hormonal changes going on, they have to deal with acne and it’s it can be very painful. And so if they can find a product, and I’ve seen quite the difference in a lot of other women in using these products for their acne, and even our found, which sounds kind of amazing, but even our foundation can help heal acne because it doesn’t sink into the pores but just sits on the top of your skin and so it doesn’t clog your pores like so many other products will. So it helps.
(Janee wears makeup on only half of her face to demonstrate the contrast.)
Emmalou Penrod 8:08
It helps. This good to know, too. Now another thing I’ve noticed from your Facebook presence is you really do not let your business interfere with your role as a Nana.
Janee L Stover 8:22
I don’t because I you know, my family comes first. I happen to have one of our sons and his young family with their four kids. They live with us right now as he searches for a job, because jobs are not always plentiful depending on what you’re looking for. So I have four grandchildren that live with me. I have a six year old who’s almost seven, five year old and a two year old that’s almost three and then a new baby who’s about four months old. So we have our hands full here but I love to do things with them. We love to do crafts together. We do cooking and so lots of times I will video. We’ll do a live together and they think that is the greatest thing. And my almost seven year old, she’s a granddaughter, and she loves everything makeup. She loves it even at this age. So we talk about it. We do a live and do makeup together. She thinks that is the cat’s meow basically. And over in June, I had three other granddaughters here for five weeks and one of them is the same age. So the two of them, we did a couple of together. We did facials. We did makeup. We just had a good time. We cooked. We made cookies. And we just had a great time. I have a fairy garden and that’s part of for my granddaughters so they each have their own fairy house because they think that’s the greatest thing is to put their fairy house in the fairy garden and pick up the fairies and they’ve got to choose their own house and their own fairies. And it’s, they just love it. And they love to put the pixie dust. So we’re always asking to put pixie dust in the fairy garden. And it’s just a fun time because I want to be the kind of Nana that I did not have as a child, I want my children and grandchildren to know that they are important to me, and I want to be around for them. So that’s what’s made a big difference for me.
Emmalou Penrod 10:31
Just think of all the memories you are creating. And I know, when I went to visit my grandchildren, I soon figured, you know, they have plenty of toys. They don’t need more things. They have plenty of clothes. But my goal was to give them memories. That’s what I want them to be able to keep, doesn’t take up too much space.
Janee L Stover 10:58
No, it doesn’t and you know, that was one thing that these two girls are going to get for Christmas. I’ve made a digital scrapbook, a scrapbook from the digital pictures from all the activities that we did together in those five weeks. So, that they each will have that. That’s their Christmas present. Because they’ll each have that, to have those memories of all the activities that we did during that time.
Emmalou Penrod 11:25
I also think you’re giving them a great gift. And I am trying to do the same with my grandchildren of being that example of setting a goal, working towards it. I know with your business, you mentioned that you want to help people. You want to make a difference. And you’ve been able to do that, for your business.
Janee L Stover 11:50
I have and I have started a Nana’s storytime on my Facebook page, which I encourage anybody who has littles to, to check it out. In fact, I had one of my followers, who loves to watch that every week, she shared it on her Facebook page with her friends. Because I love to read children’s stories. And I really, my goal now is to start a YouTube video or YouTube channel doing that because I, as I looked into that there’s not that many out there for young children to listen to stories. And you know, I know we don’t want to give our kids more screen time. But sometimes if they can just have a little screen time with a story and have someone who is reading the story with emphasis, I guess, so to speak, because I saw some and there was, it was just boring. But I try to make it fun. I try to ask them questions as we’re reading the story and think about those things. And then I try to, I don’t know if I’ve done every time, but I try to bring some kind of moral to the story kind of thing, something that they can learn from the story and take with them for that week until we meet again and have another story. And it’s it’s been really fun. I did it for every day, I think for a month back when we were quarantined. And then when school started in September, I decided I would do it once a week. And so I have it once a week, but I do that.
Emmalou Penrod 13:26
That’s awesome. I love it. And you’re right. I think they, well, I recently talked to someone who saw a need for an online preschool. You know, if mom and dad are working from home and they need something to divert that little one’s attention for a while. Why not make it educational? Fun, stimulating, positive?
Janee L Stover 13:52
Yes. Well, and I’m even this friend that this follower that shared it she she even called me the girls’ Nana, you know, they, they talk to me talk, about me as if I’m their Nana. And that just gives me goosebumps. It makes me feel good that I am making a difference in two little girls lives and hopefully more or less my own grandchildren. They look forward to it and watch it and then the little two year old, almost three year old he’s like okay, “Is it storytime? Is it Nana storytime today?” And I’m like, no, Nana did it yesterday. So we have to wait again.
Emmalou Penrod 14:29
So get some anticipation going.
Janee L Stover 14:31
Yes. It’s so it’s been a really good thing.
Emmalou Penrod 14:34
And really, and you know, as you mentioned, not not every child has grandparents. Yeah. So and you chose that name Nana. Right?
Janee L Stover 14:47
I did choose that name Nana. My my mother was always known as grandma and my grandmother’s they were both I always call them grandma and I just wanted to be something different with my grandchildren and so when my first grandchild was born 15 years ago, I made that conscious choice that I wanted to be Nana and we started then. And so all of them, all nine of my grandchildren call me Nana.
Emmalou Penrod 15:15
And this Nana is an entrepreneur.
Janee L Stover 15:19
I am and I’m working a business that I love. Because I’m working at making other women’s lives hopefully just a little bit better and that they can feel good about who they are. And help them be the kind of moms that they want to be.
