How can you break the cycle of generational poverty? With education as Cheridee Barker, Intergenerational Poverty Director for Open Doors explains in today’s episode. Cheridee shares her story of overcoming her financial struggles as a single mom and her zeal to help others do the same.

In 2015 she went through the Circles program herself and moved from single mother of two living below the poverty level to her current position.  She explains that the process includes education and mentoring provided by former graduates of the program.  Participants in the program must be at the 150% poverty level or below and be willing to actively participate by attending meetings and completing assignments.  They learn skills, change their mindset, research resources, and become more self-sufficient through better employment.

Cheridee states, “It’s a personal reward to see someone better themselves.”
