I’m talking to Dorie Olds today, and she is a Creation Coach with the School of Creation and she’s also a consulting hypnotist. Dorie, welcome.

Dorie Olds
Thank you. I’m very glad to be here today with you.

Emmalou Penrod
And we had a chance to meet through a business networking group. And I am intrigued with how you became a creation coach and consulting hypnotist. What’s the short version?

Dorie Olds
I’ve had some trauma in my life. I’ve had some things happen in my life that created a lot of stress. And, I am known. You can look me up, and I am in Wikipedia and other places. And there’s other things, look into my life that you can find out about that story. I was left, when I was about 28 years old, with four children, the oldest five youngest six weeks when my husband went into prison. I was left on my own in a way, but in a way not because I had family and friends and I had a support group that was helping me. But following my journey, it’s like what the three questions were, Who am I? What am I doing here? Where am I going? were very prominent in my life. And I have been very blessed with being given people in my life at the right time. And I feel very much poured into my life by the divine. And it’s like, “Now have this experience.” “Now have this experience.” “Now you can learn this.” And then people in my life that have helped me with that. And I know I’m not alone. I know many, we all are known. We all are known and we all have have that help, but we’re either aware of it or we’re not aware. And through my process that’s been the most important thing to me is my connection with source, my connection with God, whatever name you want to put to that. I try to use generic words because that hits helps people and doesn’t necessarily trigger people with thinking it has to be a certain way or a certain box. We’re all individual. And it’s different for each person. But that began my journey. And I’ve wanted to help other people with that journey, with finding out why are they here. What is their destiny, being able to take away the blocks, being able to take away the things in the way so they can do what they came to do. We all have a yearning of our soul. And we all have passions in our heart, and how can I help each person be able to have that fulfilled, so that when you depart, whether in a death or other ways, that you can say, “I have completed what I came to do.” And there’s peace in your heart. And that feeling that fulfillment, and that’s my journey, that’s pretty big picture. And that Creation Coach is helping people be the Creator, the Creatrix, in their life. We each are creators. We are the child of a creator. And we have that ability. And we need to step into that and to own that. And also there is a a process of competition, a competition with siblings and a family or competition in business, or the process of creation, where we all know there’s enough, that we have the ability to bring that abundance into our life, that we can create what we want to have without the lack, without feeling, “If I take this from somebody, then they’re not going to have it.” Or, “If they have it, I can’t have it.” rather than we both can have. It’s a win win for everybody. And as you learn how to do this process, there is no lack and there is no limit as to what we can create, what we can have. And you don’t need to look at the physical things and say there’s only one of those, it gets created. And that’s my process and helping people create that in their life.

Emmalou Penrod
I love that. How long have you been doing this?

Dorie Olds
Well, the creation coach I’ve only been doing recently. I started a new business in April called the School of Creation, April of 2020. Previous to that, in 1998, I started a business as a lymphatic massage therapist and an aesthetician, master aesthetician. So I did that for a year. Then I joined with another group. And at that point in 2000, I became a trained in hypnosis through the National Guild of Hypnotists. And for those 20 years, I was working with the group and doing hypnosis and getting trained by those who had more experience than I and really got some good training. And this year, I decided I wanted to go on my own and fulfill this dream, which has been percolating for several years, percolating and decided it was time and interesting to do it during COVID, doing business during COVID. And I went ahead and many other people have done the same so I’m not alone. And challenges are always there. It’s just a challenge. And that’s pretty much my journey.

Emmalou Penrod
You know, I think that much as we, I wouldn’t say we would ever want it, but there have been . . . You’re not the only one. I’ve heard many people talk about changes they made, things that became, suddenly their focus shifted. And it’s during this time, I think we’re being molded and we’re creating. I think we have a choice. We can create, or we can quit. I liked how you compared creation and competition. That was good.

Dorie Olds
Yeah. And I agree. And I have had a lot of adversity in my life. And every time there’s been blessings, and there’s been silver lining, and there’s been something not only good, but great come out of that. And so I totally agree. It’s like looking for what is, what are the possibilities here? What are the possibilities? In the Chinese kanji that describes chaos, its description of it is chaos, and chaos, there’s danger, or there’s opportunity, and sometimes both. What are you focusing on? Are you focusing on the danger or your fear? Or are you focusing on the opportunity, what can happen here, what can be created that hasn’t ever been created before in my life? Now that really is a good place to focus.

Emmalou Penrod
I love that. I love that. So talk about the services you offer to parents, to families.

Dorie Olds
Well, I’ve work with individuals, and I do some talking with a group, whether it’s a husband and wife, or parents and a child, but I work individually. So each person gets their own individual session. And that’s important, that we do it in a private way so that you can express your feelings and see what’s really going on. But I do help families. And I do like anytime anyone comes in for change work, to system selves with either stress relief, or having some habits or something that’s really getting in their way. It affects everyone around.

Emmalou Penrod
I totally agree. When you become a better person, you become a better parent,

Dorie Olds
You become a better parent. And the thing with hypnosis that is not well, not maybe common knowledge, is that we’re being hypnotized multiple times in our life, or in our day without even realizing it. And when you have a child, until they’re about eight, they are in a trance state, open to any suggestion. And that’s why they’re so fun to be around. That’s why they’re so delightful. You talk about Santa Claus, you talk about things that are magical, you talk about them, and they’re so excited, and they believe in everything you say. And so we need, as parents, and I’m a parent, we need to be careful about what we are speaking, what we’re saying, careful with our anger, careful with how we’re approaching things. Because that child is taking those things that we say and the actions we do and putting them into belief systems. And using as a base, the belief system they came with that we all are coming into this world with a belief system that’s already formed. And then from our past experience, whatever that was, and then however we respond to what’s happening in our environment from that base. And I have four children. I have two daughters and one daughter came in so afraid, everything scary. She couldn’t jump off the diving board when we did swimming lessons. And everything had to be explained and helped. And the other daughter, who was so unafraid that she jumped off the diving board without even being in the pool first. And she was launching into things. And so it’s like both of those things need to be tempered. And they came in different ways. Even though there were sisters and now they’re grown. They’re very close. They help each other. It’s awesome to see, but yet they came in with two different belief systems that need to be adjusted so that they can live their life. Well, unfortunately for my kids, I didn’t have this training and know these things when they were little. So pretty much they got what they got from me. And now that I’m older, I’m really happy to understand and can help other parents. But parents really do need to ask, “What am I creating with my kids? What belief systems am I creating with them with how I’m acting, what I’m saying, what I’m doing?” Parents need to understand that this is happening. Other places I know were TV. Sometimes we get into a trance state when we’re in watching TV and things can go in and we don’t even realize that it’s affecting us. And so we need to be really aware of that hypnotic state that we get in when we go into a trance, that is happening in our life multiple times, even in a day, where we are finding ourselves being hypnotized that we didn’t know we were,

Emmalou Penrod
You know, you touched on something. I think there are a lot of misconceptions about hypnosis. You know, in the movies, quite often the hypnotist is the villain of the movie and controlling other people’s minds. And you mentioned that it’s not the client laying on a couch and hypnotist swinging a pendulum. Can you address that some more maybe what it is, what it isn’t.

Dorie Olds
What hypnosis is, is it’s using the trance state, which we go in and out of multiple times a day, using a trance state to make some change with someone on demand. Now, we all go into that trance state, if you’ve noticed, when you get on the computer, if someone gets on a computer, notice that they get really focused, and their child is calling their name. And finally they’re like, “Mom, listen to me!” And grabbing your arm and then suddenly, you notice they’re there. You didn’t hear them even though your ears were working. Obviously, you didn’t hear them because you’re in a trance state. When you go driving, when you’re driving distances that you’re used to driving, you go in that automatic trance state, hypnotic driving, and you find yourself getting home and not remembering passing certain landmarks that you obviously did pass, but you didn’t remember them because you’re in that trance state. Your subconscious was driving. And we have our conscious mind. And we have our subconscious mind. And our thoughts are in that conscious mind, our feelings are in the subconscious mind. And then we have the actions of the body that is driven by those thoughts and feelings. We can be affected multiple times. I have a story where I remember coming home one day, in the evening, turning the TV on and just relaxing into my chair, in front of the TV, hearing in an office, automatically relaxing and going into an alpha state, which is a hypnotic state when you go into the alpha, and hearing the anchor say, “It’s flu season. You’re probably going to get the flu.” I can’t remember the exact words but something about getting the flu. And I, even in my alpha state dozing, realized that suggestion went into my subconscious. I felt it going in because I have practice. Other people in that situation may not have realized that had happened while they’re watching TV. And I set up immediately and said this, “No way am I gonna get the flu because that just went in there.” Because I know that’s what happens to the subconscious, it takes the suggestion and it’s going to make it so. That’s its job is to make that suggestion so. And so I had to stop, to get up and do what I do that, by techniques that I use with myself, to take that away. And sure enough, another day when I was watching the news, and she said, “Well, a lot of it was right. Look how many people got the flu.” Well, how many people got the flu because of what the anchor had said, I don’t know. That’s something we don’t have research on. But I knew that the way she had worded that, it may be that a lot of people got the flu and didn’t realize why. And so these are the kinds of things we need to know. When you become aware and get a little training and understanding of hypnosis, you become aware how to be more in charge of your own life. Because there are things that are going on in the subconscious. The conscious mind is the one that has the filter. The conscious mind is the one that says,” Do I want this or don’t I?” But you have to have that awareness of what’s happening to make that choice and to change it the way you want.

Dorie Olds
Now, I’ve heard that called authority hypnosis, for someone in an authority position. And I can see that, as a school teacher, I can see teachers can plant suggestions in their student’s mind either good or bad. They can say, “This is going to be a great year, you are so bright and alert, you’re going to learn so much.” Or they could say, “You’re not going to amount to anything.” So I think anyone in a an authority position needs to consider what they say very carefully. So can you hypnotize someone who doesn’t want to be hypnotized?

Dorie Olds
The answer is yes and no. And there are ways I think to do that, if you have some say in their life. But generally the answer is no. And that’s why, when I had people come into my office, we have a free consultation. We talk about the process, talk about what’s going to happen, answer any of their questions or fears and concerns and ask, “Is this something you’re going to do?” And when I have a parent bring a child in, we have that conversation with that child because that child needs to be willing. The child needs to want this. It isn’t just what the parent wants. And sometimes I’ve had a child in and the parent really wants things to be different and the child says, “No, I don’t want to do this.” I can do nothing with that. There is nothing I can do, no forcing, no making, no hypnotizing the child to do what the parent wants it to do. That child needs to be willing. Every person needs to be willing to have the result that, here’s what I have now, here’s what I want, and they need to be willing to have that process.

Emmalou Penrod
That’s my understanding, that all hypnosis is self hypnosis. we are forming a team, you’re the guide, but they have to accept it. You can open the door, but they have to step through. Is that accurate?

Dorie Olds
Yes, they have to allow the process, and be an engaging part of that. The more effective it is, is when someone is engaged in that. The more engaged you are, the more effective it is. And the more that you’re wanting to have the result that you’re looking at, that goal that you’re wanting, or the difference the difference that you’re looking at. Yes, you need to have that willingness and understanding. That’s why education is a lot of the part of that consultation is understanding how it works. Understanding what their part is, understanding what my part is, and working together as a team.

Emmalou Penrod
I can see how providing that education before you even start with the first session, making sure they understand, you would eliminate anyone who is coming to you thinking you have a magic wand to wave that will suddenly change them and they will never pick up another cigarette.

Dorie Olds
Yeah, no magic wand, no crystal ball, and no silver bullet, magic pill. And with all of that, it’s amazing how quickly things can change. There can be some change very, very quickly. And it isn’t necessarily a long drawn out process. So that even one session, you find yourself in a different space, having a different experience,

Emmalou Penrod
Especially with children, that’s been my experience. Especially with children, it sometimes just takes one session. Can you share some of your success stories without violating confidentiality or anything like that?

Dorie Olds
Yeah, success stories with children or success stories with?

Emmalou Penrod
Whoever, children and adults, whatever you feel is appropriate. I know that it has been found very effective with smoking cessation, weight release, athletic performance. I know that they’ve even done studies measuring a control group, a group that has had hypnosis and seeing significant improvement with hypnosis.

Dorie Olds
Hypnosis really is effective. I think it’s fascinating. It’s what I say. And that’s what I like, is fascinating. I’ve had a lot of success in all those areas that you’ve talked about. I’ve had kids coming in, that have trouble with school or felt like they were stupid or couldn’t learn, or they just had difficulty with the process, coming in and having it become easy. People, adults and children who come in with test anxiety, where they find themselves seize up, or they know the answers before the test. Soon as the test starts, everything leaves their mind because of the stress and their brain can’t function and they don’t know the answers. And so, having that test anxiety and having been able to release that and then go into exam, I have a lot of medical students with their board exams, being able to sit down to relax, go through each question, question by question in a relaxed way where you can access the answers in your mind. And so that’s pretty cool. I’ve done a lot of sports. I love sports. I love working with athletes. And I had one gentleman come in from Wyoming, a number of people come in from out of state, who wanted to do bull riding. He wanted to do better at bull riding. He was in a rodeo circuit and I worked with him and he had such a good result with what he was able to do, winning, doing better in his competitions, that he ended up having a lot of his friends come in. I got a name for myself with doing rodeo and I was doing cow cutting and I was doing barrel racing and all kinds of things with the rodeo, which was with really happy clients getting the result they wanted. I’ve done weight loss sessions. I love doing weight loss sessions. I love doing stop smoking. With my stop smoking sessions my first session that I do is stress, because there’s lots of stress related with that smoking habit. And I also do a preparation for stop smoking. So by the time we get to the quit date, they are ready. They’re more relaxed. They’re more prepared to be able to have that quit smoking that’s not just cold turkey. There’s a preparation with children I’ve done. I had one mother come in where her child was in the Ballet West, and every time the rat came in, the costumed rats came in, she would get really afraid and couldn’t perform. And so I did some hypnosis with her and she was able to perform very well. And her mother was so happy. I’ve done hypnosis for a little girl who choked on chicken. It really scared her and she wouldn’t eat. She would drink. Mom had to put everything in liquid, because she didn’t dare eat. And after three sessions, she was able to start eating again. Her parents were so happy. And so there’s many different uses, many different ways of using hypnosis. I had a gentleman come in who was getting ready to propose marriage, had a ring and everything ready for this marriage. And his bride-to-be broke up with him right before he proposed and said, “I’ve never loved you. I don’t want to be with you anymore.” It was very devastating for him. And he came in and I was able to help him heal, help him see things in a different way, so he’s not carrying anger and pain around with him. And it was only a few months later that he met someone else in his life that actually was a better fit for him. He’s so happy now. And because of our hypnosis, he was able to move through that experience to find someone else. So, there’s lots of different areas where hypnosis is really effective and can help.

Emmalou Penrod
Wow, I love that. It sounds like a lot of them deal with fear, helping someone deal, manage their fear, and move through any emotional trauma. Yeah, those are huge. Those are absolutely wonderful. So yeah. And when I said what services do you provide for families, you’re right, you don’t work with the family as a unit. The service you provide is strengthening the individuals, which is how you help families.

Dorie Olds
Yes, and what I would do, like, if a husband and wife came in which I have done, work with the husband, work with the wife, we talked about what the issues are and what they’re working on. And then we’d have conversations together, about what different things, but then their sessions were individual. And that’s how I would do with children also, but then getting together and saying, What is it? What do you want? What’s the end result that you want? What is it we’re working for? And then having conversations but the sessions are individual.

Emmalou Penrod
Yes, but the communication. I really believe that, it’s been my experience, I haven’t been a consulting hypnotist nearly as long, just a couple of years. But my experience has been that we have these, compare our subconscious to a computer. We have these programs running that control what we do, how we interact. We may make the firm resolution that we’re giving up sweets, and the next thing we know we’re eating a doughnut. So it’s a matter of rewriting those programs. Some of them need to be totally erased, replaced with something better. Some of them just need to be tweaked. But it’s these programs. And we think we make all of our decisions based on our conscious mind, but wouldn’t you say it’s really more our subconscious that’s running the show?

Dorie Olds
Yes, it’s more of a subconscious. And if you had to have a fight between your conscious and subconscious, subconscious is going to win. I really like the metaphor of the mind is a computer and that the subconscious is an operating system. And where’s it operating correctly? Where’s it operating the way you want? And where is it not? And I think that’s where hypnosis comes in. And where you can start changing those things, where you want it to be the operating system that you want to have.

Emmalou Penrod
Yes, totally agree. And Dorie, I love talking to you. You are a wealth of knowledge and experience. I felt like I could learn so much from you. And so could anyone else. So how do they contact you?

Dorie Olds
Well, you can contact me through my phone, and my phone number is 801-674-7329. I’m sure it will be posted. I also have a website. It’s https://schoolofcreationutah.com/. And they also have an email. And right now it’s SchoolOfCreation@pm.me and it may be changing. And so we’ll list if there’s a new new email that’ll be listed. But that way you can always contact me through that email. And then I’m also on Facebook. And I’m also on Twitter, if you want to find me on Twitter, but I don’t have business Twitter or business Facebook pages yet, but that will be coming.

Emmalou Penrod
So they would just look for Dori Olds.

Dorie Olds
Dori Olds, and be aware when you Google that, you’ll have a lot of stuff come up from other things because of my history. So just know that it’s gonna happen.

Emmalou Penrod
Okay, all right. And you work with people in person and you’re based in Salt Lake City, in Utah. Do you also work with people, now that ZOOM we’re all using ZOOM, do you use ZOOM, too?

Dorie Olds
Yes, I do ZOOM. I’ve done Skype. I’ve been actually doing that for years because I was part of an international group. A number of years ago, I would do sessions for people in South America, Central America that I definitely wasn’t going there. On ZOOM, phone call. A phone call is good if someone doesn’t want to do ZOOM just wants to do it through phone call. There are other ways if someone has another face to face or FaceTime or other things. And then in person, so those are the ways that I do it.

Emmalou Penrod
Awesome.

Dorie Olds
Yeah, Millcreek, it’s in I’m in Millcreek. So, it’s easy to find.

Emmalou Penrod
Okay. Well, Dorie, thank you. You are a delight to talk with and have a lot of experience. I know you can help anyone who has any way they want to change and become a better person. You are the Creation Coach.

Dorie Olds
I love that when I had that come to my mind, like this is what I want to do.

Emmalou Penrod
Yep. All right. All right. Well, you have a great day, and thank you.

Dorie Olds
Thank you. Thank you for inviting me.
