Shannon Shepherd, APPAC

Are we allowing cultural bias to affect our health decisions? Shannon Shepherd, Certified Placenta Arts Specialist, provides some valuable information in this episode. She explains the benefits of placenta encapsulation, or consuming the placenta, for new mothers.

The placenta is rich with nutrients and hormones that quickly replenish the mother’s body after delivery. Studies has shown marked improvements in milk supply, energy level, and overall mental and emotional well being. This is an effective way to reduce or eliminate postpartum depression.

Shannon has been professionally trained in the management and care of the placenta, cleaning it, dehydrating it, and crushing it to fill capsules. She works in a commercial grade kitchen and follows strict guidelines to ensure sanitary and correct procedures. Placenta encapsulation may be unfamiliar and outside of our comfort zone, but the benefits to mothers are worth giving this option a closer look.
